New Bill FAQs

Q: Why is Nicor Gas changing its bill format?
A: We wanted to make our bill more customer friendly. Our research and customer focus groups showed that our customers wanted a bill that was easier to read and to understand. The new format is a direct response to addressing our customers' needs.

Q: What are the main improvements to the bill?
A: The main improvements to the bill are:

  • The paper size is larger (letter sized - 8 ½" X 11"), and, in most cases, all billing information will be included on one page rather than two
  • The high-level Account Summary section, which customers have told us they have a great interest in reading, is featured prominently on the front page
  • The new bill is easier to read since it is printed in a larger font and includes easier-to-locate information with boxed-in sections
  • The enhanced Energy Profile gives more month-by-month information on past natural gas usage, average monthly temperatures and gas costs to help you make wise energy choices
  • The information on the back of the bill has been clarified and enhanced, including a new "how to read your meter" section

Q: Has my Nicor Gas account number changed?
A: No. The look of the bill has changed and additional information is being provided, but your account number remains the same.

Q: Does changing your bill format have anything to do with your rate relief request?
A: No, the two are not related. The format change was made to address our customers' need for an easier-to-read and understand bill. The rates have not changed.

Q: What can I do to avoid high gas bills?
A: We strongly encourage our customers to sign up for the Nicor Gas Budget Plan. There is no fee to sign up and the plan will spread your payments throughout the year, helping offset larger winter bills. You can sign up by simply paying the Budget Plan amount shown on the front of your bill above the Payment Due box, or sign up online at nicorgas.com/my account.

Q: What can I do to save paper and trees?
A: Nicor Gas encourages customers to eliminate paper altogether by signing up for electronic billing through their bank, CheckFree® or another online service. It's easy and you're doing something good for the environment.

Q: What is CheckFree®?
A:  CheckFree  is a free, "paperless" online service whereby you can conveniently receive, view and pay your Nicor Gas and other bills electronically.
