Nicor Gas Helps Create Awareness about Careers in the Energy Industry
October 15, 2013
NAPERVILLE, IL – Oct. 15, 2013 – Nicor Gas, the state’s largest natural gas distribution company, which provides service to customers in 646 communities in northern Illinois, is partnering with the Illinois Energy Workforce Consortium (IEWC) and other Illinois-based energy groups to increase public awareness of a variety of careers within the energy industry, and to emphasize the important role these companies play in local economic and workforce development.
As part of the awareness efforts, Nicor Gas is supporting Careers in Energy Week (October 14 - 20), which recently received an official proclamation by Illinois Governor Pat Quinn. It supports a national initiative led by the Center for Energy Workforce Development, a non-profit organization comprised of electric, natural gas and nuclear utilities and their industry associations.
During the week, Nicor Gas is sponsoring an awareness campaign that includes the mailing of informational postcards to local schools, placing ads on job-related internet sites and launching a new webpage, www.nicorgas.com/DiscoverCareersInEnergy targeting parents and educators, as well as students in grades 5 through 12. The website features several Nicor Gas employees who describe their jobs, most of which are essential to helping the company provide safe and reliable natural gas service to more than 2.2 million customers each day.
“We provide a vital energy source that is essential to everyday life,” said Pat Whiteside, vice president of Nicor Gas Business Support, who also serves as executive sponsor of the IEWC. “While we have a tremendously talented workforce that is dedicated to ensuring that customers receive safe and reliable service each and every day, it is also important that we look to recruit our future generation of workers. These individuals will be critical in supporting the long-term sustainability of the energy industry.”
Later this month, representatives from Nicor Gas also will visit middle and high schools to make presentations about the company, careers in the industry and the attributes and skills Nicor Gas looks for in workforce candidates.
In addition to Nicor Gas, the consortium includes Energy Learning Exchange, Ameren Illinois, Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives, ComEd and Exelon Generation, Mt. Carmel Public Utility Company, Peoples Gas and Primera.
