General enrollment for LIHEAP opens to the public Nov. 1
November 1, 2013
NAPERVILLE, IL – Nov. 1, 2013 – With the heating season upon us, Nicor Gas wants to remind customers who may be eligible for financial assistance to take advantage of funds available that help offset winter heating costs. Starting today, the enrollment period for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) opens to the general public.
Administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity, LIHEAP is a federal block grant that provides resources to states to help low-income families meet their energy assistance needs. The program, which provides heating assistance to low- and fixed-income residents, including working families with young children and senior citizens, allows a one-time annual payment to help offset a consumer’s energy costs.
Under the income guidelines for LIHEAP, a household’s combined monthly income for the 30 days prior to application may not exceed 150 percent of the federally established poverty level as shown in the chart below. For more information about LIHEAP or to locate a local application agency, residents can call 877-411-9276 (WARM).

Nicor Gas believes in the importance of providing customers with information and encourages them to take advantages of programs to help manage energy costs.
Nicor Gas is partnering with other local utility companies to host three south suburban energy fairs in November, where customers can get additional information about available energy assistance programs. Those who attend the fairs should bring with them proof of income, a copy of their utility bill and proof of social security numbers for all household members.
The dates are as follows:
- Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 333 E. 162nd St. in South Holland;
- Thursday, Nov. 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Biela Center, 4545 Midlothian Turnpike, in Crestwood;
- Saturday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ford Heights Community Service Center, 943 E. Lincoln Highway, in Ford Heights.
One program available to customers is the Nicor Gas Budget Plan. With the plan, customers are billed the same amount every month for a 12-month period. The plan helps minimize "peaks and valleys" in natural gas bills caused by winter's cold and summer's heat, making household budgeting much easier. During the summer, Budget Plan payments may be higher than actual bills – allowing customers to build up a credit balance to offset winter bills that may be higher due to increased usage.
Nicor Gas customers also can take advantage of a number of energy-saving opportunities available through the Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program, which provides rebates and incentives to help homeowners and businesses save energy and money. Eligible customers gain education, resources and financial rebates to offset the cost of installing and implementing energy efficiency projects.
