Nicor Gas Kicks Off Careers in Energy Week

October 13, 2014

Campaign Aims to Build Awareness for Educators and Students

NAPERVILLE, IL – Oct. 13, 2014 – Nicor Gas, Northern Illinois’s largest natural gas distribution company, which serves customers in more than 650 communities, is partnering with the Illinois Energy Workforce Consortium (IEWC) and other Illinois-based energy groups to increase public awareness of a variety of careers within the energy industry, and to emphasize the important role energy companies play in local economic and workforce development.

As part of the awareness efforts, Nicor Gas is supporting Careers in Energy Week (October 13 - 19), which recently received an official proclamation by Illinois Governor Pat Quinn. It supports a national initiative led by the Center for Energy Workforce Development, a non-profit organization comprised of electric, natural gas and nuclear utilities and their industry associations.

During the week, Nicor Gas is sponsoring an awareness campaign that includes the mailing of informational postcards to local schools, placing ads on job-related internet sites and encouraging the public to visit its webpage, nicorgas.com/DiscoverCareersInEnergy, targeting parents and educators, as well as students in grades 5 through 12. The website features several Nicor Gas employees who describe their jobs, most of which are essential to helping the company provide safe and reliable natural gas service to its more than 2.2 million customers each day.

“The natural gas industry is exciting and ever-changing, and we want to encourage and empower kids to be a part of it now and in the future,” said Pat Whiteside, vice president of Nicor Gas Business Support. Whiteside serves as executive sponsor of the IEWC. “This is an exciting time to work at Nicor Gas. Our team of more than 2,000 employees construct, operate, maintain and inspect our system to ensure natural gas flows safely and reliably to customers each day,” he said. "Our children are our future, and this program hopes to build our future workforce.”

During Careers in Energy Week, more than 10 Nicor Gas employees will be participating in an event hosted by Prairie State College that is designed to connect minority students with Nicor Gas employees. The event is a workforce development tool that provides information to students interested in opportunities and careers in energy. It will be held on Thursday, Oct. 16 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Prairie State College located at 202 S. Halsted St., Chicago Heights, Ill.

Later this month, representatives from Nicor Gas also will visit middle and high schools to make presentations about the company, careers in the industry and the attributes and skills Nicor Gas looks for in workforce candidates.

In addition to Nicor Gas, the consortium includes: Ameren Illinois Corp., Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives, ComEd and Exelon Generation, Energy Learning Exchange – Illinois State University, Mt. Carmel Public Utility Company, North Shore Gas, Peoples Gas, Prairie State Generating Company and others.
