General Enrollment for LIHEAP Opens to the Public Nov 1
October 30, 2014
NAPERVILLE, IL – The heating season is here, and Nicor Gas wants to remind customers who may be eligible for financial assistance to take advantage of funds that could help offset winter heating costs. Beginning Nov. 1, the enrollment period for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) opens to the general public.
Administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity, LIHEAP is a federal block grant that provides resources to states to help low-income families meet their energy assistance needs. The program, which provides heating assistance to low- and fixed-income residents, including working families with young children and senior citizens, allows a one-time annual payment to help offset a consumer’s energy costs.
Under the income guidelines for LIHEAP, a household’s combined monthly income for the 30 days prior to application may not exceed 150 percent of the federally established poverty level as shown in the chart below. For more information about LIHEAP or to locate a local application agency, residents can call 877-411-9276 (WARM).

Nicor Gas believes in the importance of providing customers with information and encourages them to take advantage of programs designed to help manage their energy costs.
Nicor Gas is partnering with other local utility companies to host two energy fairs in November, where customers can get additional information about available energy assistance programs. Those who attend the fairs should bring with them proof of income, a copy of their utility bill and proof of social security numbers for all household members.
The energy fairs will be held on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 8 a.m. to noon at Thornton Township Hall, 333 E. 162nd St. in South Holland, and on Thursday, Nov. 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Biela Center, 4545 Midlothian Turnpike in Crestwood. During the month of November, Nicor Gas is also partnering with Loaves & Fishes in Naperville to assist their clients.
One program available to customers is the Nicor Gas Budget Plan. With the plan, customers are billed the same amount every month for a 12-month period. The plan helps minimize "peaks and valleys" in natural gas bills caused by winter's cold and summer's heat, making household budgeting much easier. During the summer, Budget Plan payments may be higher than actual bills – allowing customers to build up a credit balance to help offset winter bills that may be higher due to increased usage.
Another program available is the Nicor Gas Sharing Program, which provides one-time annual grants to qualified residential customers. Administered by the Salvation Army, the Sharing Program is funded by direct contributions from Nicor Gas’ customers and employees. To receive a Sharing grant, customers are required to meet income guidelines and apply in person at a local Salvation Army office.
Also available to customers is the energySMART Program that helps to manage costs by lowering out-of-pocket expenses for energy efficiency improvements and energy consumption, allowing customers to gain more control on how much natural gas they use and consequently save on energy costs.
