Programs Available to Help Nicor Gas Customers Manage Winter Heating Bills

January Gas Supply Charge 46 Cents; Slight increase from previous month

January 6, 2014

NAPERVILLE – Jan. 06, 2014 – As the region is dealing with some of the coldest temperatures in nearly a decade, Nicor Gas is taking the opportunity to make customers aware of programs that can help them manage their winter heating costs.

For the month of January, Nicor Gas has filed a gas supply charge (GSC) with the Illinois Commerce Commission of $0.46 per therm – up $0.06 from the previous month. The GSC reflects the actual cost of natural gas supplies the company purchases on behalf of customers and passes along without any markup.

Because the cost of natural gas typically increases during some of the coldest months of the year due to supply and demand, Nicor Gas encourages customers to take advantage of programs that may help manage energy costs.

One program available to customers is the Nicor Gas Budget Plan. This bill management program provides a convenient way for customers to manage their natural gas bills, making household budgeting much easier. The budget plan minimizes the "peaks and valleys" in their bills by allowing customers to pay the same amount every month for a 12-month period. Customers interested in enrolling in the budget plan should call 888-Nicor4U (888-642-6748).

Nicor Gas customers also can take advantage of a number of energy-saving opportunities available through the Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program, which provides incentives intended to help homeowners and businesses conserve energy and save money. The program provides education, resources and financial rebates to make homes and businesses more energy efficient. For energy-saving tips and tools, visit NicorGasRebates.com.

Eligible customers also may apply for financial assistance to help them with their natural gas bills. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a state and federally funded program that provides financial assistance to households with incomes of up to 150% of the federal poverty level to pay their energy bills. For additional information about the grant program, go to www.liheapillinois.com, or call the toll-free LIHEAP information line at 1-877-411-9276.

The Nicor Gas Sharing Program offers eligible applicants financial help by providing one-time annual grants to customers who currently earn between 150% - 200% of the federal poverty level. The program, administered by the Salvation Army, is funded by direct contributions from customers, employees and Nicor Gas. Customers who wish to make a donation and help other customers in need can do so via their monthly gas bill. To apply for assistance from the Nicor Gas Sharing Program, customers should visit their local Salvation Army office.
