Extreme Winter Relief Fund provided critical financial support to hundreds of Nicor Gas customers
June 11, 2014
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – June 11, 2014 – The Extreme Winter Relief Fund, which temporarily relaxed certain eligibility requirements for the Nicor Gas Sharing Program in response to the severe winter weather the area experienced, has been effective in boosting the number of customers who qualified for financial assistance.
Since March 24, when the interim guidelines were in effect, more than 575 households in northern Illinois took advantage of the modified program and received energy assistance grants. The one-time benefit has been vital in countering the effects that one of the decade’s harshest winter heating seasons has had on heating bills.
This Fund allowed customers who were ineligible for state and federal energy assistance programs and the matching grant component of the Sharing Program to receive up to $350, if they made payments totaling $75 within 60 days of their application date. The special program initially was set to expire on April 28. Due to the overwhelming response, it was extended through May 31.
“The goal of the Extreme Winter Relief Fund was to help ensure that as many customers as possible received the help they needed following the long, cold winter heating season,” said Beth Reese, president of Nicor Gas. “We are pleased that more of our customers took advantage of the program, which directly aligns with Nicor Gas’ commitment to support hard-working families in northern Illinois.”
The Nicor Gas Sharing Program is supported by direct contributions from Nicor Gas employees, customers and a company match. The program is administered by 41 local Salvation Army intake offices throughout the Nicor Gas service area. So far this year, the program has provided approximately $200,000 in financial assistance to families and individuals in northern Illinois.
