Nicor Gas, local fire departments, American Red Cross join forces for natural gas safety program

NAPERVILLE, ILSept. 17, 2015 – In an effort to increase awareness about natural gas and general home safety, Nicor Gas is partnering with the American Red Cross to take its natural gas safety program to fire stations in 53 communities across its northern Illinois service territory. The program, now in its tenth year and held in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week (October 4-10), will run through the end of October. The public will have the opportunity to learn important information that can help protect them and their families in the case of an emergency.

“This program is one of Nicor Gas’ signature community outreach programs. It provides a great opportunity for our employees to interact with our customers in an entertaining and educational environment,” said Melvin D. Williams, president, Nicor Gas. “By teaming up with local fire departments and, for the first time, the American Red Cross, we are also able to educate customers about natural gas safety, fire prevention and other emergencies. The safety of our customers and the general public is our number-one priority, and this program provides valuable learning tools that could save lives.”

Nicor Gas volunteers will provide kid-friendly demonstrations and important tips and tools to ensure that families know what to do in the unlikely event of a natural gas emergency. Display tables featuring hands-on activities will engage children about natural gas, its origin, use, and safety tips. Parents can learn about the Nicor Gas energySMART program, as well as initiatives offered by the American Red Cross that will help save lives in the event of an emergency.
