Nicor Gas is committed to making a difference in the communities it serves.
20th Annual Volunteer Day
Nicor Gas celebrated its 20th annual Volunteer Day on Saturday, May 21. As part of the milestone celebration, hundreds of employee volunteers participated in 20 projects across northern Illinois during the day, including beautifying nature trails, organizing food pantries, interior and exterior painting and the installation of a flag pole at a veterans shelter.
Volunteer Day, which has taken place on the third Saturday of May since 1996, is one of the largest single-day corporate volunteer initiatives benefiting cities and towns in the Nicor Gas service area.
Some of the locations where volunteer activities took place include: Hearthstone Manor in Woodstock, Sand Ridge Nature Center in South Holland, Greater Elgin Food Pantry in Elgin, McLean County Habitat for Humanity in Bloomington, Salvation Army Food Pantry in DeKalb and the Conservation Foundation in Naperville.
We were happy to take part in the Kennedy Middle School Career Day in Kankakee and the McHenry High School Career Fair.
Party for the Planet
Every day is Earth Day at Brookfield Zoo, but the zoo’s annual Party for the Planet celebration showcased how guests can take small steps to make a big impact for animals around the world.
The day-long extravaganza, presented by energySMART, a Nicor Gas Program, featured fun and environmentally-friendly activities for the entire family. Highlights of the event include a tree planting, recycling opportunity, crafts, live entertainment, and an Eco Expo, where Nicor Gas customers received a free energy-saving kit.
Save Energy, Save Money
Energy-savings kits were also being given away by energySMART at the DeKalb Busines Community Expo.
Chicago Flower and Garden Show
Nicor Gas was proud to continue sponsorship of this year’s event, and hosted an interactive booth for children on the weekends of March 12 and March 19. Children could dress up as a Junior Excavator and learn how natural gas pipelines deliver gas to their homes and schools.
Nicor Gas and JULIE, Inc., held a safe digging forum at our Naperville headquarters. More than 70 people attended the forum representing 23 municipalities and public works teams.
The purpose of the event was to educate and begin a conversation with municipalities and public works teams about the importance of safety and safe digging. The forum’s theme, “Get the Scoop on Safety,” included topics such as safe digging, emergency management, asset protection and the Investing in Illinois project. Special guest Mark Frost, executive director, JULIE, Inc., provided municipalities with important information on safe digging.
