Small Business Emergency Assistance Program

A one-time relief program funded by Nicor Gas to help our small business customers to stay open over the winter months.

Program Description

The Nicor Gas Small Business Emergency Assistance Program provides a limited number of one-time grants to eligible small business customers in the form of a credit on their account. Grant amounts are equal to 50% of the past-due account balance, up to a maximum of $500. The remaining balance can be set up on a payment arrangement. 

The application deadline for this program was December 31, 2020. The application period has closed.

Program Terms

The Nicor Gas Small Business Emergency Assistance Program (the “Program”) is funded by Nicor Gas and may provide a limited number of one-time grants to Nicor Gas small business customers who apply for the grant in the manner described below and meet the eligibility requirements. The grant is in the form of a billing credit of 50% of the applicant’s past-due account balance (as of December 1, 2020) up to maximum credit of $500 (the “Grant”).  The amount of Grants available are limited (up to cumulative amount of $50,000). The Program will end when all Grants are exhausted, thus not all eligible applicants may receive a Grant.


To be eligible for a Grant, the small business must:

  • Be a non-residential, non-home-based, Nicor Gas sales service account with a past-due balance of 60 days or greater as of December 1, 2020;
  • Be currently operating;
  • Have fifty or fewer full-time equivalent (40 hours per week) employees (including the owners);
  • Have been negatively impacted by COVID-19 (lost sales/revenues, reduced staff, increased expenses due to health requirements);
  • Not have been awarded a prior Grant under this Program;
  • Apply for the Grant via the method and means described herein; and
  • Submit the Program application by December 31, 2020.

How to Apply

To apply for the Grant, eligible applicants must:

  • Provide all requested information and answer all questions on the Application Form;
  • Sign the Application Form; and
  • Submit the Application form online by December 31, 2020 (submissions by any other means, or received after the end date shall not be accepted).

Awarding of Grants

Once the program closes on December 31, 2020, grants will be awarded to eligible applicants in the order received and according to the following Nicor Gas service territory designated Areas until all Grant funds are exhausted:

Area 1 – Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, McHenry, Grundy, Kane, Kendall Counties (up to 75% of available grant funding)

Area 2 – All other counties - (up to 25% of available grant funding)

Grant funding not awarded in an Area due to lack of eligible applicants may be reallocated to the other area.

Eligible applicants will receive a grant in the form of a credit on their Nicor Gas Account.

Program Start and End

The Program will commence on December 15, 2020, and the deadline to submit applications is December 31, 2020.

Other Terms

By submitting an application, applicant agrees to be bound by the terms herein and hereby releases Nicor Gas from any claims for damages related to the Program. Grants are not redeemable for cash and are not transferable – no substitutions for a Grant are allowed.  Nicor Gas may at any time end, suspend or modify the Program and/or Grant amounts without notice.  Program is void where prohibited, and any applicable taxes are the responsibility of applicant.  All Program and award decisions by Nicor Gas are final.  Only one Grant per customer.  The Program is governed by Illinois law.
