Nicor Gas Rate Request Decision 2021

November 18, 2021

Ensuring the safety of every family, business and community we serve is our highest priority. We’re making meaningful investments to modernize and improve our gas infrastructure to ensure every customer’s energy needs are met safely and reliably, now, and well into the future.

Nicor Gas filed a request with the Illinois Commerce Commission in January 2021 to increase rates for natural gas delivery service. On Thursday, Nov. 18, the ICC approved a rate increase in the amount of $240 million. This rate increase includes capital investments Nicor Gas has made to modernize its distribution, transmission and storage infrastructure, ensuring the long-term safety and reliability of service, and improving the overall customer experience.

These investments allow Nicor Gas to deliver natural gas safely and effectively even during extreme weather events like this February’s subzero temperatures, ice and snow, the 2014 and 2019 Polar Vortexes, as well as during an unexpected crisis like the global pandemic. Nicor Gas customers never went without heat to warm homes and cook meals for their families.

With the adjustment, a typical residential customer will experience an average increase of approximately $3.70 per month or 3.8% per typical residential customer total bill. The new rates are scheduled to go into effect no later than Dec. 1, 2021.

We realize the impact rate increases can have on our customers, especially those affected by the pandemic and did not make this request lightly. Our goal since the beginning of the pandemic has been to ensure our customers most in need have bill payment and assistance options, and that continues today.

Nicor Gas has enhanced its partnerships with local charitable organizations, vendors and grocery delivery services to direct customers to programs that also will help families with basic needs such as grocery assistance and clothing.

We continue to proactively work to make energy as affordable as possible for customers while making investments to modernize and improve our gas infrastructure, ensuring the long-term safety and reliability of service and improving the overall customer experience.
