Sniffy Says: Smell Gas? Act Fast!
Hello and welcome to the Nicor Gas for Kids page!
As a skunk, I certainly know about bad odors – like the “rotten egg” smell that is added to natural gas to help you know if there is a possible natural gas leak.
And you know what? If you smell that stinky rotten egg odor, you’ve got to act fast! This means don’t delay — get away! Leave the house or building.
Remember these tips when you leave:
- Don't use or touch anything electrical, like flipping off light switches or turning off the TV — things Mom and Dad would normally have you do before you leave the house.
- Don't even use a cell phone!
- Don't look for the leak.
Just leave the area right away and then call us at 888.Nicor4U (888.642.6748) or 911.
To help you recognize the “rotten egg” odor of natural gas, ask a parent to request a scratch and sniff sample. Simply email us with your name, address and number of scratch and sniff slips you are requesting.
