Nicor Gas is committed to delivering safe and reliable natural gas and maintaining transparency in its operations to meet our customers’ everyday needs, now and in the future. Smart, ongoing investments in our natural gas infrastructure will allow the company to continue delivering clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy our customers know and expect.
Nicor Gas filed a request with the Illinois Commerce Commission in January 2025 to increase rates for natural gas delivery service to be able to continue these investments. On Wednesday, Nov. 19, the ICC approved a rate increase in the amount of $167.8 million. The proposed improvements will help enhance the safety, integrity, reliability and resilience of our system, especially during extreme weather, while also helping Illinois meet its economic development and sustainability goals.
The new rates are scheduled to take effect Dec. 2 and a typical residential customer will experience an average increase of approximately 3.98% annually, or $3.30 monthly. Even with this increase, Nicor Gas’ distribution rates will remain among the lowest of any major natural gas utility in Illinois.
Every business decision we make is focused on providing our customers with high-quality and consistent service. We know our customers count on us every day to deliver the energy they need and recognize our responsibility to help manage those energy costs. Many Americans are facing challenging times, and no one wants to see rising energy bills. The decision to make this request was not taken lightly.
At Nicor Gas, we are here to do everything in our power to minimize the impact on customer bills, from providing bill payment assistance to helping make homes more energy efficient. Our Community Connection Center (C3), helps customers navigate energy assistance options, such as the Sharing and Energy Aide programs, payment arrangements and the Budget Plan. And we’ve enhanced our partnerships with local charitable organizations, vendors and grocery delivery services to direct customers to programs that also will help families with basic needs such as grocery assistance and clothing.
