Sewer Inspection Work in Your Neighborhood

The Legacy Cross Bore Program
Inspection equipment is utilized to maneuver inside sewer mains and laterals.

Contractors use a variety of equipment to monitor and inspect sewer mains and laterals, including a camera that is pushed through a sewer lateral cleanout or sewer main camera crawler that has the capability of launching laterals.

At Nicor Gas, we routinely inspect the sewers surrounding our existing and newly installed infrastructure and utilize contractors to perform this work.

What is a cross bore? Utilities use a trenchless technology called horizontal directional drilling (boring) to pull cables, conduit and pipe underground. This installation method causes less impact to the surrounding area and minimizes environmental disruption.

Why are sewer inspections necessary?

Utilities use a trenchless technology called horizontal directional drilling (boring) to pull cables, conduit and pipe underground. This installation method causes less impact to the surrounding area and minimizes environmental disruption. It also saves time, allowing utility crews to work more efficiently. Unfortunately, there are instances where our gas pipe is inadvertently pulled through existing infrastructure, leaving the opportunity for accidental damage to the gas pipe in the future.

If a natural gas pipe is found in your sewer line, stop all work immediately and call Nicor Gas at 888.Nicor4U (642.6748) and report it as a natural gas emergency. Be sure to let the customer service representative know that you have discovered a cross bore. We will take the appropriate steps to remove the gas line and make the area safe.
