Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program provides $350,000 incentive to Kankakee-based vitamin E and surfactant production company

Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program provides $350,000 incentive

Incentives will help Kensing reach sustainability, carbon goals

The Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program presented Kensing, a leader in plant-based vitamin E manufacturing, with a $350,000 incentive to support the Kankakee County production facility’s retrofitting project.

With this incentive, the facility that employs nearly 200 individuals installed a regenerative thermal oxidizer – one of the most energy-efficient pieces of equipment available today – to improve Kensing’s production process while also reducing energy usage.

A regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO) is designed to maximize energy efficiency through heat recovery methods by utilizing the heat generated during the oxidation process. This ultimately reduces the overall energy requirements of industrial processes. With this equipment, Kensing can expect to save more than 636,000 therms annually – the equivalent of 3,700 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).

“We are proud to work with Kensing to help them reach their energy efficiency goals and meet another successful milestone in their sustainability journey,” said Meena Beyers, vice president of Business & Community Development at Nicor Gas. “As the largest natural gas provider in the state, we believe that a clean energy future is possible with the right solutions. That’s why we are committed to ensuring our customers have tools and incentives for energy-saving solutions for equipment that is critical to their operations.”

This incentive is just the first step with Kensing towards reaching their energy efficiency and sustainability goals. The company has validated a near-term Science-Based Target, aiming to reduce Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 42% by 2030 vs. a 2022 baseline.

"We are honored to receive this recognition from the Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program, which underscores our commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency,” said Serge Rogasik, CEO, Kensing. “At Kensing, we believe that integrating cutting-edge technologies like the regenerative thermal oxidizer is not just a sound business decision but a crucial step towards reducing our environmental footprint. This partnership exemplifies our dedication to pioneering solutions that drive both operational excellence and environmental stewardship."

Kensing expects to save an additional 100,000 therms as they process through their business energy efficiency rates for multiple steam trap replacements, as well as a steam condensate return tank that is currently going through the Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program’s custom pre-approval process. Kensing will continue to explore other opportunities with Nicor Gas to accelerate energy savings in future projects.
