Stay safe and warm during winter weather with Nicor Gas

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Dec. 10, 2025 – As snow begins to accumulate and the cold weather settles in, Nicor Gas is ready to deliver the clean, safe, reliable and affordable natural gas its customers count on to keep their homes comfortable and warm throughout the winter season.

Nicor Gas customers benefit from natural gas that was purchased when prices are historically lower and stored for use during colder months. The company’s natural gas storage system plays a vital role in meeting heating demands during extreme winter weather, including snowstorms and freezing temperatures. During these peak periods, gas from storage fields can supply approximately 40% of the energy distributed to homes and businesses.

To help customers stay safe, warm and energy efficient this winter, Nicor Gas recommends the following:

1. Have heating systems inspected

  • Schedule an inspection with a qualified professional to confirm natural gas equipment is operating safely and efficiently before severe cold or snow arrives.
  • Regular maintenance helps prevent unexpected breakdowns during frigid weather.
  • Never use natural gas appliances, such as ovens or stovetop burners, for space heating.

2. Weatherize for energy savings

  • Improving insulation and sealing drafts can reduce energy costs and keep heat inside.
  • Seal windows and doors tightly to prevent cold air infiltration and condensation.
  • Insulate attic access doors to ensure they close securely and retain heat.

3. Keep vents and meters clear of snow and ice

  • Snow and ice buildup can create safety hazards and affect appliance performance.
  • Check outdoor vents from furnaces, water heaters and dryers to ensure they are not blocked by snow or ice. Blocked vents can cause dangerous carbon monoxide buildups. Either use hands or a soft broom to clear snow around a natural gas meter—never a shovel or hard object—and avoid striking the meter or piping.

4. Smell gas? Act fast!

  • If the distinctive rotten egg odor of natural gas is detected or a carbon monoxide leak is suspected, take immediate action.
  • Leave the area right away and call 911 or Nicor Gas’ 24-hour emergency line at 888.Nicor4U (642.6748) from a safe location.
  • Do not turn lights on or off, use electrical devices, or do anything that could create a spark.

Natural gas remains one of the most affordable and efficient residential heating options—more than three times more affordable than electricity, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
