Home Energy Assessment FAQ

What is a home energy assessment?

Home energy assessments are designed to help identify opportunities to save money and energy in your home. We currently offer two types of assessments through the Home Energy Savings offering:

In-home assessments: Qualifying income-eligible customers may recieve a free in-person home energy assessment from a trained energy advisor including free energy-saving products and a comprehensive report recommending additional ways to save both money and energy. Eligible customers may also qualify to receive free weatherization improvements like air sealing and insulation.

Self-assessments: Customers can complete a short online survey about your home's energy use and receive free or discounted energy-saving products delivered to your home for self-installation. You will also receive recommendations to help you save even more. Customers who complete a self-assessment will not be able to receive additional services through the Home Energy Savings offering.

How do I participate?

Visit eesavings.com or call 855.660.9378 to get started.

How long is the assessment?

  • An in-home assessment typically takes 60 to 90 minutes, but may vary depending on the size of your home.
  • Self-assessments typically take about 20 minutes and can be completed in multiple visits if needed.

Do I need to be present during an in-home assessment?

An adult over the age of 18 will need to be present to answer questions about your home as your Energy Advisor performs the assessment.

Is this an energy audit?

No, a home energy assessment is a free offering which identifies ways to save money and energy in your home and includes free or discounted energy-saving products. An energy audit typically includes more comprehensive home analytics and diagnostic testing including thermal imaging, blower door testing and combustion safety testing. An energy audit may cost between $100 and $500 or more depending on the extent of the audit.

I am a renter, can I participate in and assessment?

Yes, you are eligible for an assessment, but you’ll need to obtain the property owner’s permission beforehand. Renters must have the property owner’s written approval, including their contact information and which free energy-saving products have been approved for installation.

I participate in the Customer Select program/purchase my gas through a third-party supplier. Am I still eligible for a home energy assessment?

Yes, if you participate in the Customer Select program and receive your gas bill from Nicor Gas you are eligible for a home energy assessment.

Am I required to move forward with other energy efficiency projects after my assessment is complete?

No, there is no obligation to complete any of the recommendations provided during the home energy assessment.

Do I need an assessment to qualify for rebates?

An assessment is not required to participate in the home rebate offerings. Nicor Gas encourages all residential customers to take advantage of the home energy assessment offering at any time along their path to energy efficiency.

If you're interested in moving forward with the energy efficiency recommendations from your customized energy report, check out our rebates for your home to get started.
