Nicor Gas Rate Request 2023

Nicor Gas has filed a request with the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) that would adjust rates to allow the company to meet the current and future demands of our 2.3 million customers for clean, safe and reliable natural gas service. Even though a rate case increase is necessary to run our business, at Nicor Gas, we are here to do everything in our power to minimize the impact on customer bills, from providing energy assistance to helping them make their homes more efficient. Our customers expect and deserve natural gas service that is safe and reliable every day, including during extreme weather like the 2014 and 2019 Polar Vortexes and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The company has delivered on that commitment for more than 60 years, and over time the costs for keeping its system safe and reliable have increased.

The Nicor Gas rate request is primarily driven by:

  1. Nicor Gas’ business objectives continue to evolve as new federal compliance-related regulations are implemented and require ongoing capital investments in our natural gas pipeline system. This system provides direct benefits to our customers and the more than 650 communities we serve across Illinois. These investments ultimately benefit our environment by lowering our operational methane and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
  2. Nicor Gas is making continued investments to ensure system-wide reliability through the replacement of aging infrastructure. Our main objective has always been the safe delivery of natural gas to our customers, especially during the most extreme weather events such as the 2014 and 2019 Polar Vortexes. In doing so, the safety of our employees, our pipeline system and the public is and always will be our number one priority.
  3. Inflation has impacted operating and maintenance costs, such as material, equipment, services and employee-related expenses, that allow Nicor Gas to deliver reliable, 24/7/365 natural gas service to more than 650 communities across Illinois.
