Nicor Gas commits $225,000 to the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago over next five years

NAPERVILLE, IL – October 13, 2022 – As we recognize National Fire Prevention Week, Nicor Gas is announcing a $225,000 commitment to the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago over five years to support their Illinois Home Fire Campaign, as well as the immediate mobilization of people and resources to respond to natural and human-caused disasters.

“At Nicor Gas, the safety and well-being of our customers and communities is always our top priority,” said Christa Markgraff, vice president of Gas Operations at Nicor Gas. “As a company, we believe in supporting our communities during their hardest days following disasters including home fires, as well as natural disaster such as the tornado that struck Naperville, Darien and Woodridge – just miles from our corporate headquarters – in 2021. This funding will support those across our service territory from the suburbs of Chicago to Bloomington when they need it most.”

With this donation, the American Red Cross will be able to provide more than 7,500 households with new smoke alarms through their Home Fire Campaign. In the U.S., fires are the most common and deadly disaster threat faced by households. With approximately seven deaths and 33 injuries a day across the country due to home fires, Nicor Gas is proud to support the nonprofit’s mission to provide families across Illinois with a critical, life-saving device.

In addition, Nicor Gas’ donation will support the Disaster Services Award at the American Red Cross’ Heroes Breakfast. The annual event honors individuals and groups for acts of bravery and dedication throughout their communities, and funds raised are used to support the organization’s general operations to provide rapid response during times of crisis.

“The support of local companies and organizations like Nicor Gas allows the American Red Cross to keep moving forward and provide life-changing help and opportunities for those in need,” said Celena Roldán, CEO, American Red Cross Illinois Region. “We look forward to sustaining our relationship, impacting communities and continuing to deliver on our humanitarian mission in the years to come.”

Since 2017, Nicor Gas has contributed more than $450,000 to support the American Red Cross’ mission to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to natural and human-caused disasters.
