Nicor Gas provides warmer days for children with new winter coat donations

Partners with Operation Warm to donate more than 2,000 coats to children in need

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Dec. 10, 2020 – With the temperatures falling, it’s a tough reality for many children that a warm winter coat is a luxury their families cannot afford. That’s why Nicor Gas is partnering with Operation Warm to help distribute more than 2,000 brand-new winter coats to children from low-income families.

“This holiday season will be like none other we have experienced. Not only has COVID-19 challenged our ability to connect with friends and family, but it has also created and exacerbated a financial hardship for many,” said John O. Hudson III, president and CEO of Nicor Gas. “It is our obligation to care for our communities, which is why I am excited about our partnership with Operation Warm.”

Operation Warm is a national nonprofit dedicated to providing warmth, confidence and hope for children in need through the gift of brand-new coats. Founded in 1998, Operation Warm and its partners have provided more than 3.5 million coats across America.

Volunteers from Nicor Gas delivered boxes of new coats to Title 1 schools throughout its service territory for distribution to children in need as part of the energy company’s Warm Homes, Warmer Hearts campaign. For every furnace rebate application received in October, the Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program pledged to donate a new coat to a child in need. With over 1,500 applications and another $15,000 donation from Nicor Gas, more than 2,000 coats will be given to students at qualifying schools, including locations in Robbins, Blue Island and Elgin.

Cars lined the street waiting to enter the parking lot of one of those schools – Turner Elementary, where more than 120 new coats were delivered for pick-up during a socially distanced drive-through event Dec. 5 in Robbins, Illinois.

“Partnerships like those with Nicor Gas and Operation Warm are especially important this year when more families than ever are in need,” said Posen-Robbins School District 143.5 Supt. Anthony Edison. “These coats not only provide warmth, but more importantly, they bring a smile to the face of the children – thank you.”
