Nicor Gas employees have the Energy to Serve

25th anniversary of giving back to the community during annual Volunteer Week events

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – May 17, 2021 – For 25 years, Nicor Gas employees have rolled up their sleeves in service to donate their time and resources to community organizations throughout northern Illinois. The annual day of service in May has grown to a week of events for volunteers.

“Our commitment to our customers and the communities we serve extends beyond the delivery of clean, safe, reliable and affordable natural gas,” said John O. Hudson III, Nicor Gas president and CEO. “While this year’s Volunteer Week events may look a little different as we continue to keep our communities safe, I am proud of our employees and their dedication and passion to volunteerism, which is greater than ever before.”

This year’s events will include a mix of virtual and socially distanced in-person volunteer opportunities with United Way-funded organizations and other nonprofit groups that advocate for and support basic human needs, environmental stewardship and economic development.

Nicor Gas’ Volunteer Week coincides with a larger month-long volunteer campaign by its parent organization, Southern Company Gas. Throughout May, employees from its operating companies will volunteer in the communities where they live and work. In Illinois, these events include:

  • Painting at Ascending House, a tech incubator in Matteson
  • Gardening and clean-up at a Bridge Community in Addison
  • Planting flowers and yard work at Hearthstone Manor in Woodstock
  • Installing a new fence at Lake Katherine Nature Center in Palos Heights
  • Clean-up during the 30th Annual DuPage River Sweep in Naperville
  • Removal of invasive plant species at Silver Creek Woods in Rockford
  • Food sorting and packaging at food banks in Chicago, Geneva, Joliet, Naperville and Normal

Virtual events will also be held throughout Nicor Gas Volunteer Week and include packing basic needs care kits for the United Way, assisting Boys and Girls Club game nights, and brochure preparation for communities served by Mutual Ground.

En Rapport, Nicor Gas’ employee resource group that focuses on African American workplace networking, is hosting a virtual food drive in conjunction with the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Through May 24, donations can be made online or shop the virtual grocery store with more than 40 products to choose from. For every $1 donated, the Greater Chicago Food Depository can provide three meals with 100% of proceeds from this online food drive being used to help provide meals to those in need.
